Monday Morsels: The Bloodline Trail

...a taste of romance

THE BLOODLINE TRAIL
by Lynda Rees

CHAPTER 1

Jaiden helped Mr. Bennett chase his escaping herd of cattle through the broken fence line. “Thank goodness you brought a couple buckets of grain to entice these stubborn cows to safety.” She’d blocked the road with her cruiser at one end and placed orange cones at the other to keep traffic out of danger and ensure strays didn’t accidentally get hit.

“This ain’t my first rodeo.” The old farmer grinned pushing one errant beast toward safety.

Once the country road was free from danger, she helped guard his animals so they wouldn’t run loose again while Mr. Bennett repaired busted fence. Finally finished, he shook her hand and wiped his brow. “Whew, thanks for your help, Deputy Coldwater.”

“It’s part of the job, but you’re welcome.” Jaiden loved working as deputy to Sheriff Wyatt Gordon of Sweetwater.

She made good time driving back to town. Dusk was starting. She neared the deserted Barnes farm at the edge of town. A light flashed from a window.

Damn, those kids must be partying again.

She’d arrested one juvenile last week—the one she caught. His buddies ran faster and escaped. Jaiden dragged the boy home. His dad was pissed at his son and assigned punishment. He had to clean police station bathrooms for a week.

It tickled her seeing his dad come down on him that way. It’d serve him better than any other punishment. He wasn’t a bad kid. He arrived like clockwork after school each afternoon with sagging shoulders and head hung low.

He was making friends with other deputies. Finally he had guts to look into Jaiden’s eyes. She smiled and winked. He blushed and grinned.

She hit a button to call her office. “Sheriff Gordon here. What’s up, Jaiden?” His southern twang could charm honey out of a bear’s paws.

“Wyatt, it looks like vandals sneaked into the Barnes place again. I’m going to check it out.”

“Okay, but be careful. Keep your body camera on and radio handy. Buzz me if you need backup. I can be there in five.”

“It’s probably just kids again. They’ll run, and I’ll be home in half an hour. I’ll let you know how it goes.”

“You do that, Deputy Coldwater.” Wyatt had confidence in her ability to handle a few youngsters looking for a good time; but if he thought real danger was present, he’d come running. He was a good friend and a great boss.

Jaiden drove into a dirt drive and circled behind a house. Surprisingly a vehicle parked there. Local kids typically walked, not wanting to draw attention. They usually carried a beer cooler but were too young to legally partake. They generally partied in the back woods, but once last winter they broke into the house. It looked like they were at it again.

A close look at the vehicle indicated differently. The fancy SUV probably cost around what she made in a year. This didn’t appear to be kids.

She stepped from her cruiser wearing a body camera. Warily she approached the car shining her flashlight. Tinted windows made it difficult. Close up it was apparent no one was inside or nearby. It was locked. She paced to the house and tried the back door. It opened.

Using a firm authoritative voice she called, “Police, anyone here?” Dead silence. She called out again—same response. “I’m coming in.” Holding the door wide, she entered.

The old farmhouse kitchen had seen better days. Two years of no habitation left every surface covered with dust and cobwebs.

Making her way into the sparsely furnished dining room with no sign of life, only footprints in dust proving someone recently walked through. The living room was much the same. Furniture had been covered with sheets, and still, no one in the house.

A first-floor bedroom was also filled with sheet-covered items. Its filthy floor held an expensive, pull-behind suitcase. A tag read C. Barnes.

Huh, apparently a Barnes heir had arrived.

Jaiden made her way back through the maze of rooms. She yanked the door shut behind her. No sign of C. Barnes or anyone else. Returning to her cruiser, she activated her radio.

“Wyatt?”

“Yep, I’m here, Jaiden. How are things at the Barnes place?”

“Quiet. A fancy SUV is parked in back of the unlocked house. I found footprints and a suitcase in a bedroom with a tag for C. Barnes, whoever that is.”

“C? I suppose that’s Clay, for Clay Barnes. He must’ve returned home. Wonder if he’s in town to stay or merely settling his mama’s estate? It’s been a couple years since her funeral. Too bad he let the place deteriorate during that time.”

“Yep; the kids around here haven’t helped it any.” She climbed into the cruiser. “I didn’t find Mr. Barnes or anyone else around. Maybe he’s exploring his property. Want me to search for him?”

“No, no need. If there’s trouble, he’ll let us know. Go home and enjoy what’s left of your evening. You’re off duty now, right?”

“Sure thing, boss; see you tomorrow.” Before she finished writing notes on her stop, a tall, lanky gentleman in too-new jeans, shiny boots and a crisp, white dress shirt with sleeves rolled to elbows, strolled from the woods. His smile lit his face engaging pale blue eyes like none she’d seen before, unless photos of that sexy, old actor, Paul Newman counted.

He strode purposely toward her closed door with an arm extended—not bad looking, but not a muscular. She’d always been attracted to the brawny sort. Built more like Levi—his gangling body towered above her. She shined her flashlight his way.

Pearly-blue eyes sparkled. A perfect set of shiny, white teeth flashed a welcoming smile. His hand flipped up reflecting light.

She flicked her light off. Through approaching dusk moonlight caught moisture as he self-consciously licked what appeared soft, sensual lips.

“Howdy, Ma’am. Are you the Welcome Wagon?”

“Afraid not, I’m Deputy Coldwater.  I saw a light and figured you for a trespasser.”

Monday Morsels: Horseshoes & Roses

...a taste of romance

HORSESHOES & ROSES
Book 7, The Bloodline Series
by Lynda Rees

CHAPTER 1

Dovie Fuller-Dane sat across a table in her restaurant, Fuller House Bistro, from Lemon Sage Gordon. It was a down day, so the room was deserted. Dovie’s French café had been open a month, and business boomed.

“Kudos to the woman who tamed our illustrious sheriff. Wyatt Gordon has been a chick magnet since he was as a good-looking, high school footballer. The shock of silver hair he’s sprouted prematurely makes him even more handsome.” Dovie rolled her eyes and did a twirl with her pen-toting hand. Dovie was a harmless flirt. Joking, she presented no threat and meant none.

Sage laughed. Her marriage to Sheriff Gordon was solid as stone. “I nailed him as a player when we met. I’d heard how women flocked to him, though he’d stopped dating. We kept being thrown together, but we clashed left and right. Wyatt’s aura drew me to him. I sensed his pain. Knee deep in my own misery, the strong attraction surprised me. Sweetwater and my organic farm were my new start. I didn’t expect to find love.”

“Well, honey child, you’ve breathed new life into Wyatt. That’s a fact. Now I’m benefiting from your move. Your organic herbs and produce are customer favorites on my menu. Riley says it’s a good marketing hook. Folks enjoy locally grown and organic combined with fabulous cuisine.”

Sage eyed her curiously. "You’re recently divorced. Right? I saw you cozying up to Moggie Larrs. You wouldn’t be carrying a torch for him by any chance?”

Dovie’s pale, creamy skin flashed as brilliantly red as her long locks. “Am I so easy to read? Yes, my ex is the worst of the world’s cheaters, with one woman after another. He finally settled on a wealthy slut who funded his restaurant in Singapore. He got her. I got the shaft. It’s all good. I’m home where I belong.” Her hand waved nervously. “And Moggie—that man’s smoking hot. His Charles Bronson, sultry, smoking hot handsome is a major turn on. I’ve been swooning over him since I was a sappy teen and he was Gran’s farrier.”

“Moggie’s come a long way from the injured cop who shod horses for a living.”

“Yes, he’s Gran’s foreman. Gran ages quicker by the day and can’t continue the pace. Moggie manages the farm, breeding and racing horses. She adores him and treats him like family.”

“Do you and Carlton plan to take over more of that, now you’re home?”

“God—no. Carlton hates horses and wants nothing to do with the farm. He and Howard live in a lovely, golf course condo. I like riding, but live to cook.”

“What will you and Carlton do with the farm once your Gran passes?” The old gal was in her late eighties in bad shape.

Dovie’s bright, green eyes lit with surprise. “I haven’t given it much consideration. Gran encouraged us to pursue our dreams. The farm belonged to her, and she never acted disappointed in our lack of interest. I’ve spent more time away than I should have. I love her and owe her everything. Our parents died when we were young. She raised Carlton and I. I’m trying to make up lost time with her and enjoying every second.”

“How about a beer? I’m meeting Wyatt, Corrie, Levi and Riley at The Ten Mile House. Want to join?”

Dovie considered for a moment. “Sounds fun. I haven’t seen them since the double wedding. Mr. All American, blonde, shaggy hair with baby, blue eyes capable of melting chocolate, hasn’t changed in all these years. He’s a world renowned horse breeder and racing mogul, but still the sweetest, most down-to-earth guy around. It’s a miracle someone didn’t snap Levi up long ago.”

“Every racing or political groupie, heiress with a horse fetish, or gold digger in the country pursued Levi for his money or power. He and Riley Powers were in our wedding party. Riley was a workaholic with a thriving business and no time for social life. They hit a few speed bumps then found true love in each other.”

“I adore Riley. She’s a fabulous marketer. I heard about the murder and kidnapping—scary stuff. Hard to believe all the trauma happened in quiet Sweetwater. I understand you enjoyed an adventurous first year, too.”

“Adventure isn’t how I’d describe it. Murder, mayhem and clashing with an over-protective sheriff was more like it.” Sage winked.

“Did your free-spirited, independence drive the caregiver in Wyatt crazy?” Dovie laughed.

Sage grinned mischievously standing. “Still does, but he’s addicted to my impulsive nature. He calls me a danger magnet. Believe me, it’s not intentional.”

The bell chimed. The front door opened. A uniformed deliveryman stepped tentatively inside. “Hello.” Seeing the two women nearby, he approached and extended a box toward them. “Is one of you Mrs. Dovie Dane?”

Dovie reached for it. Handing her a pad, he grinned. “Sign here please.”

Dovie wrote her name and handed the man a five from her pocket. “Thanks.” She sat the carton on the table. “Who would send flowers?”

Sage shrugged. Dovie flipped string from the cardboard, removing the cover and revealing a dozen long-stemmed, white roses. Dovie’s breath caught in a frightening way. She back-stepped, putting distance between her and the package. Panic crossed her face.

Sage placed a gentle hand on Dovie’s shoulder. “You okay?”

Dovie blinked and shook her head. “Is—is—there a note?” She eyed the gift like she feared coming closer.

Sage retrieved a note from the box. Dovie threw a hand up resisting. Sage shrugged and read it. “It won’t be long now.” It’s not signed. Who’s it from?” She eyed her new friend cautiously.

“Oh, God, no. Not again. He’s followed me. This can’t happen.” Her face blanched as white as Sage’s farmer’s cheese.

...a taste of romance

BLOODLINES & LIES
by Lynda Rees

CHAPTER 1

Riley’s spike-heeled Jimmy Choo pump hit the sidewalk with her phone to her ear finishing up, as usual, one last call before the evening. She was anxious to buy and delivering dinner for her parents’ wedding anniversary on her way home—something special so they could celebrate a fabulous love they shared.
Something didn’t appear right as she emerged onto the Cincinnati street. Rose petals littered the sidewalk. Her glimpse upward led to a gold-gelded, white horse-drawn carriage. Then the most handsome man Riley ever laid eyes on emerged. The familiar long drink of cowboy’s booted feet stepped onto the walk and strode toward her with cocky confidence only Levi Madison could get away with. The last rays of evening sun caught his unruly mane of blonde hair casting a golden wheat image flowing in the breeze. The sight of the man she adored more than any other filled her with joy.

What the heck was he doing in Cincinnati? He should be hard at work on his horse ranch in Sweetwater, Kentucky. This was an unexpected treat.
Levi’s smirking smile and smoky gaze churned her belly to gelatin making her knees go weak. Those long legs bent onto one knee, and he slipped a black velvet box from the pocket of his western-cut shirt. He flipped it open, extending the jewel container toward Riley.
She hadn’t realized her breath was held and her heart had ceased beating until a gush expelled from her lungs. The sparkle of a square-cut, gigantic solitary caught the glow from the fading sun and jolted a shot of electricity shocking her back to the present.
      Whoa.
“Riley Powers, I can’t live without you. Take mercy on this old soul. Marry me.” Levi’s swanky, southern drawl filtered words into a sexy melody rolling across his delectable tongue.
Reality interrupted her muse of how Levi used it to make her tingle inside and out. She glanced around, aware of surroundings for the first time. Levi had a tendency to make her forget everything and everyone but him when they were together.
Her parents, Leona and Earl Powers, stared in anticipation. Leona wrung her hands grinning. Earl looked a combination of excited and proud. To the other side Corrie Parrish, Levi’s s0ister stood beside Riley’s best friend since college, Lemon Sage Gordon. The pair of females looked like they’d swallowed a canary begging to sing. Her close friend and assistant,
Dory Engle’s red Chanel suit set off her glowing dark almond skin and mass of bushy, brunette curls cascading her shoulders. If Dory wasn’t a gorgeous black woman she and Corrie could’ve passed for sisters. Corrie completely contrasted Dori with similar, only blonde hair and ivory complexion. Standing together they made a spectacular pair.
A chuckle came from behind. Riley spun finding her remaining staff.
“You guys? Dory, how did you keep this secret and follow me so fast?”
“Hell, Riley, we thought you’d never head home. I texted Levi the second you picked your coat up. Soon as you closed your office door we high-tailed it onto the next elevator, following you.”
Riley grinned and hugged her pal. “Confidentiality is your specialty. You sure as hell can keep a secret. No wonder you’re indispensable.”
She hugged Sage and Corrie. “You gals drove all the way here for this? It’s so sweet. I can’t believe you kept this secret from me.” Riley play-punched Sage’s shoulder.
“I couldn’t miss my little bro’s big moment. Levi’s been a basket case anxious for this moment. Sage and I drove into town this morning, did some shopping, drank our lunch in margaritas, and are heading to the spa after this. We’re treating ourselves while we were here.”
Corrie tossed her long tresses across a shoulder. As CEO of Adele Industries, her family’s corporation, Corrie generally wore pricy designer attire. Today she was decked out in jeans, sandals and a tank top covering her slim, voluptuous figure.
Sage hugged Riley, and her long, brunette ponytail bounced as she swayed. Her college roommate and best gal pal’s slim frame and long runner’s legs dwarfed Riley, who stood half a foot shorter than her friends. “We wouldn’t miss this for the world. You’re right. You read me like a book. Good thing you’ve been tied up here at your corporate office for the last week. I’ve been dying to call and chat, but was afraid to talk with you. You’d surely have realized something was up in my voice, and I’d have given in to any pressure. I can’t keep a secret from you. Avoidance was the best I could do.”
“Sage, you’re the most trustworthy woman I know.” Riley gave her a peck on the cheek.
“Not with you, sister.” Sage smiled sweetly, and her big, brown eyes sparkled.
“Hey, I disagree.” Levi ambled his elongated frame towering closer to Riley. “I am not a fan of you being tied here in the city. I’ve missed you at the farm.”
“I’ve missed you too, Levi.” Her hand cupped his square jaw. Tiny bristles tickled her palm sending a twitch of electricity racing straight to her core. Apparently she was into the All-American, blonde-haired, blue-eyed type, because Levi was one sexy hunk of manhood.
“Who would’ve envisioned it? Not me. A year ago romance was the last thing I considered needing in my hectic life.”

Ad executive Riley Power’s fiancé, Levi Madison, and his Native American horse trainer, Calvin Coldwater, prepare for triple-crown racing. A stunning redheaded flame returns to Sweetwater targeting Riley’s man while Riley’s preoccupied with her dad’s health instead of focusing on wedding plans. Police search for a drug ring when her home is broken into and a neighbor murdered. Riley and pals Lemon Sage Benton and FBI Special Agent Reggie Casse follow another line of investigation. Danger follows them home.

Getting to Know Lynda Rees

author
The Write Way Café welcomes author Lynda Rees, a dreamer who believes in making her dreams come true.

When did you first have the thought you'd like to write a book? Was that first thought related to writing romance?
I was four and learning to read with my grandpa and the Bible. He interpreted the stories and it was fascinating drifting into other worlds than the one I lived in. My first author hero was Louisa May Alcott, and my favorite of her books is Eight Cousins. It’s still one of my favorites.

What was your path to getting this book written and published? What type of research did you do?
I live on a farm, and we raised our children on horseback. My daughter was a horse trainer for Lane’s End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky, and we have friends in the racing industry. Plus I’m an avid fan of horse racing and the magnificent four-legged athletes.

Where did the idea for your story come from?
Bloodlines & Lies is book 5 of The Bloodline Series. It didn’t start as a series; however, I fell in love with the characters in book 1, Parsley, Sage, Rose, Mary & Wine and wanted to discover what happened in the future of the small, tight-knit community. Each book thereafter has focused on different characters in the neighborhood, but brings in the original characters I started this journey with Lemon Sage Benton-Gordon and Sheriff Wyatt Gordon.

Why did you pick the setting you did?
I’ve always heard one should write what you know. I know about horses and racing, advertising, marketing, and relationships. My daughter and her first career as a race horse trainer inspired some of the ideas and our past in general spurred much of the rest.

Are your main characters completely imaginary or do they have some basis in real people? Do they reflect aspects of yourself?
Both—myself, family, friends and people I’ve met through the years inspire parts of characters I craft. Each one is an individual, sometimes made up of lots of bits and pieces of real or imaginary people. I believe this is true with most novel writers.

Did you face any blocks while writing the book, and if so, how did you handle them? If not, what's your secret?
Not really. I simply sit my butt in the chair and my creative muse takes over.

What have been surprises you've encountered while writing the book and after?
I have a background in corporate America in marketing and global transportation. When I decided to seriously pursue publication of my writing, I was surprised at the way the industry has evolved, and the amount of marketing that the author is responsible for. Unless you’re someone like Stephen King or Nora Roberts, with a long-standing successful track record, the marketing end of book selling is in the hands of the writer, whether indie published or with a small or large press publishing house. Minimal effort is put out by the publisher.

What did you learn? For instance, what did you learn about yourself, your process, the writing world; about thoroughbred horses, Kentucky, and the Triple Crown?
I was fortunate to have a horse-trainer, my daughter Brandy, who was educated in equestrian therapy and breeding to rely on to help me resolve the intricacies of the breeding process and the size of the prize for breeding in the racing industry. I’ve always been an avid fan of racing.

Tell us about your writing space and how or why it works for you.
I have an office in my home where I escape to for four to ten hours a day. I usually lose track of time, when working. My husband signals when I might’ve been at it too long by sitting a cocktail next to my mouse pad. He’s my true hero to put up with a workaholic like me.

What are some of your favorite books and why?
I adore anything Janet Evanovich writes. I’ve embarrassed myself more than once on a crowded plane cracking up out loud at her stories. I love to laugh, but find I’m not that funny when writing. I love Danielle Steele books and have consumed every one eagerly. I adore American History, so love books like Gone With The Wind and stories like Lonesome Dove, North To Alaska, and Dances With Wolves. I’ll read anything about a soldier or cowboy, so love a classic hero.

What are you working on now?
I’m finalizing God Father’s Day, a stand-alone romantic suspense set at a lake resort in Kentucky. Justin’s life seems perfect until tragedy awakens an evil past threatening to destroy his future and his chances with Becky, who has been hurt before and can’t compete with his wealthy fiancé.
This story haunted me since childhood when the father of a friend was gunned down on the street by the Mob.  I am excited to have it completed.

Would you like to try your hand at writing a different genre?  Which one and why?
Actually, I’m doing final editing on my first middle-grade children’s book. It is book 1 of the series titled Freckle Face & Blondie, and co-authored by my granddaughter, Harley Nelson. It is a work of love.

If you were not a writer, what would your dream job be?
Travel writer. I’ve been fortunate to have traveled to some glamorous, intriguing places and worked with many folks from other cultures. I have a wonder lust that never seems satisfied.

What aspect of writing gives you the most trouble?
I’d say the marketing end. It’s my background but when I decided to become a published author, I didn’t realize it would be my future job as well.

Who is your favorite hero/heroine?
That would have to be my lumberjack friend, Logan Pace, the hero of my award winning historical novel Gold Lust Conspiracy, where a marriage of convenience turns Jessie Blackstone into a young widow responsible for the livelihood of many in savage, lawless Skagway, Alaska. Jessie faces severe weather, brutal landscape, her sordid past, and her attraction to virile lumberjack Logan Pace. She must learn to thrive in a man’s hostile business world.
