Tuesday Special: Can't Outrun Destiny

PATRICIA ANTONE

by Patricia Antone
Duncanne Collinne MacKay sneaks out with the idea of seeing the fabled rune stones on her family’s property. Descended from Druids, she doesn’t believe the superstitious stories heard since childhood.  Confronted by a cousin, she insists she is going with or without him, sneaking out via an old hidden passage.

Evan, who believing the old stories true, goes strictly to keep her out of trouble. They are stunned to encounter trespassers. Trespassers, while bent on murder, also look like they stepped from the old paintings on the keep’s walls, swords and all.

Tucked away in her memory of that night is the drool worthy man in a kilt who rescues them. After warning her to stay away from the runes, Gavin Leod promises to protect her with his life. He then leaves her with the gift of a ring. The Moonstone, set in silver, says she is under his protection. The ring’s swirling stone heightens her gifts. The same gifts she keeps tucked away in denial.

Murders have her banned from visiting Scotland after that night by her family. If there is a full moon scheduled, her visit is not. As the last of the MacKay Clan, Duncanne is dragged back due to the need of settling family affairs. The job is unfortunately hers by default. Everyone else has passed and not by natural causes. More like well executed accidents, on full moons.

Unknown to Duncanne, this visit to Scotland will start a collision course that has been gearing for centuries. The Sleeping Warrior has a duty, and that duty will be fulfilled.

On his patrol, Gavin spots a woman running and the enemy searching for her. He intercepts the woman, discovering she is his thought to be lost ward.

Duncanne Collinne MacKay tried to outrun her destiny. Now she will not only carry a big sword to meet it, she will use the fabled power her family passed down to save her line.

About Patricia Antone:  A life long resident of Central New York, I am a mom of two, who with my husband, is learning to empty nest. Then again, it isn’t quite empty with Zeus (AKA No No Bad Dog) and his newly adopted sister Toni (AKA The Town Crier) still at home to stir things up.
When not hanging out with the hubby and fur kids on the patio, or enjoying my garden, I can be found scribbling into a notebook with a new idea I can’t wait to share.
Recently, I helped found The Wandering Wordsmiths. A group of local authors, who as a group, travel together to celebrate reading. While we hang out with our readers, we toss all those ideas about to keep the words flowing to the pages.
Hope we get to see you at one of our appearances!

Monday Morsels: The Light at the Tunnel's End

...a taste of romance

THE LIGHT AT THE TUNNEL'S END
by Patricia Antone

Pushing himself, he does one more set of repetitions. The weights are set light for strengthening rather than muscle building. Upon finishing, he shifts to sit up on the bench. Tired from another sleepless night, he sighs.

The taunting memories wake him coated in a terror laced sweat. In the haze of his dreams, he hears the shouts of warning too late.

He stares frozen with nowhere to go when the swinging girder comes for him three stories off the ground. All he remembers is the pain when it collides with him. His clipboard and hat falling in time with his echoing cry of pain.

Men’s screams drift to him. The grip of the first man to reach him where he dangles precariously is painful in his desperation to keep Jan from falling to his death.

~ ~ ~

“I got you. I got you,” Will tells him while shouting, “Hurry the hell up! I won’t let go.” It is a promise he hopes he can keep. “I got you,” Will repeats trying to keep Jan conscious by talking to him.

The second man joining them, a new hire Will barely knows, helps to drag him more on the girder, then tries to control the bleeding. Shifting to a more stable position, he removes his belt to use as a tourniquet.

“It’s gonna hurt,” he apologizes. “I gotta do it.”

Will tightens his grip. “Do it. He’s going to bleed to death.”

“Here, tie him down.” He removes his safety harness. “If he passes out, we could all fall.”

Will keeps one hand gripping Jan, as the other guy helps him to wrap the harness around and tie it off.

“Done. Hurry up.”

Jan remembers the feel of the leather biting into his thigh, the pain nearly making him pass out. His eyes roll back as the darkness closes in to escape it.

“No, Jan!” Will shouts. “Look at me. Don’t let go.”

“Hang on,” the other voice says seeming far away. “I can see flashing lights. Help is almost here. Hang on.”

It seems forever before a hook and ladder truck from fire rescue tears in to get him down, so they can race him to a hospital.

~ ~ ~

Jan shakes away the memories. Bits and pieces of the whole accident still flash in and out in a haze of pain and panic. Many details are still not clear. No issue, he remembers more than enough, thanks.

Leaning to put his elbow on his right knee in habit, he nearly topples off the bench. A rude reminder that the accident cost him most of his right leg.

After nearly a month in the hospital, he is recovered enough to begin physical therapy. Once he rebuilds some lost strength and his stump heals, he will be fitted with a prosthetic leg. He refers to it as his newly acquired ‘peg leg’.

Maybe it was watching those Pirates of The Caribbean movies while recovering, but it helps him to deal with it. Not that he has a choice in the matter.

Looking around absently he sees his physical therapist (PT) guy, Kenneth, talking to a girl sitting on a bench. Recognizing her as one of Kenneth’s regulars, today he notices she hasn’t cried.

“That’s new,” he comments to himself.

An older woman usually bringing her, a loud fight usually starting up when the younger one tries to assert herself. The older one leaves mad as all hell after insulting the younger one. Instead of PT, she sits in an office Kenneth takes her to calm down. Once there she sits and cries for the entire slot she is scheduled.

Jan also knows, Kenneth drives her home sometimes. That happens on the days she shows up by cab. The cab driver who escorts her scolding her the whole way. Then he insists Kenneth call and ask dispatch for him if she needs a ride home.

He finds it odd Kenneth is real protective of her. He seems to be trying to be her friend. Then again, it looks as if she doesn’t have any. It is hard enough to ask for help. But to need it and have no choice in the matter? It is extremely shattering to one’s self-esteem.

“Time to make the donuts,” Jan mutters laying down and getting back to his exercises. Getting that new leg ASAP is his number one goal.

Unbeknown to him, Kenneth is giving the girl on the bench, who is one of his most concerning patients, the riot act.

“If you do not make it look like you are trying they will put you in a facility,” he snaps testily. “Don’t you care?”

“Blind people live on their own every day. I want to be left alone,” she answers.

Kenneth has a newsflash. “Your mother is convinced you are a danger to yourself. I get copies of your doctor’s reports. FYI, I read them, so I can help you.”

When she doesn’t answer that he takes another shot.

“I can’t help you if you don’t help yourself. You’re being labeled as an emotional grenade. That is an issue if you want to live independently.”

The feel of his hand closing around hers is a surprise, yet she doesn’t move.

“I want you safe, Lucy. Even if it is a facility of your family’s choosing. The question of whether you want it or not will not matter,” he warns.

“They can’t put me where I don’t want to be,” she argues, hoping she sounds convincing.

“Let’s hope,” Kenneth says to that. He keeps going even though he is batting a big fat zero. “Did you eat today? You’re still too thin,” he remarks. “Make sure you are eating. At least one meal a day?”

When she doesn’t answer, he sighs in frustration, giving up for now.

“If you need me call.” With the release of her hand, she listens to his footsteps fade.

She sighs. As she has no appetite, she barely she chokes down what food she does eat. The lecturing has it seem like he cares. Maybe it is not good for his references to include patients he failed?

Waking up was just the beginning .......

The moment of the cars colliding throws Lucy Cuse screaming into darkness. Now she just wants to be left alone. The accident took everything from her.

It took her job and her sight., but most of all, it took her independence. A move to an ‘assisted living’ facility for ‘her safety’ is out of the question. Lucy is not going anywhere she doesn’t want to. No one is making her!

Multiple times per week she goes to physical therapy sessions. She hates it but if she goes and does ‘just enough’, it keeps the well-meaning at bay.

Jan, who is recovering from his own horrifying accident three stories up, has been watching Lucy for weeks. She tugs at him, and he can’t explain why. When he is asked to “lend a hand” to motivate her, he reluctantly agrees. The blind leading the cripple? There is joke in there he is sure.

Lucy is struck dumb by Jan’s offering of friendship. He lets her cry and scream, while he doesn’t tell her she is wrong to feel the way she does. In a way, he has walked a mile in her shoes. Even if it is on crutches.

Lucy takes his offer of friendship and slowly discovers she is still a woman. Jan in turn finds himself falling for the beautiful, yet stubborn woman who truly believes she will get her sight back.

When hearts get involved the rules change. Each want what they want, but is the light at the tunnel’s end that train each of them has already encountered? Or will they find their way out of the tunnel and into the light that awaits them, together?

Monday Morsels: Catching a Cowboy's Eye

...a taste of romance

Catching a Cowboy's Eye
by Patricia Antone

The men kept checking their watches while doing the ranch’s chores. Having started since just after dawn, the clock watching didn’t begin until late morning. Breaking for lunch, they ate quickly, getting right back to work. As the afternoon wore on, their hovering by the barn’s doors for any sign of a truck coming down the driveway became constant.

Their newly hired ‘House Manager’ intending to arrive today. A week ago, she started her cross-5country drive at their job offer. She was hired willing to move all the way from New York City, to live and work at their family’s cattle ranch in Clanden, Wyoming.

Her job as ‘House Manager’ would be keeping the main house. An added bonus to her qualifications? Being a Registered Nurse.

Kyle and his brother Levi lost their mother 5 years ago to cancer. Riddled in grief, they worried about their father’s declining health. The brothers felt supervision at the house would be a good thing. Running a large ranch made for a long exhausting day for the men trying to do it all. The long list of responsibilities made for not enough hours in the day to do it all in.

Kyle walked to the barn door while glancing at his watch, again.

“She’ll get here.”

“I know she’ll get here. I just hope she stays.”

Levi chuckled then stopped what he is doing to talk. “We already padded the money offer, twice. Add in the new truck, remodeling of her living quarters, and totally upfront about the ranch’s needs.” He gestures off. “Our expectations are totally within reason.”

Leaning on a pitchfork he seems to ponder something. “We can offer her one of the houses on the property if the apartment isn’t to her liking.”

Kyle nods absently at the idea. “If we need to. I want to keep it as a last resort for now.”

Two of the houses belonged to Levi and Kyle. Assorted family, or employees, have lived in the others over the years. A schedule has one of them staying with their dad certain nights. It also means one of them got a good night’s sleep. Their father being a tad demanding. The joke the hands made says their dad is equal to a needy puppy.

Kyle’s sigh radiates his worry.

“Unfortunately, no backup plan in the world will mean shit. We have been honest with the all of them. The last one lasted barely three months.”

Levi chuckles, as that had been ugly, along with embarrassing, for him.

“Too bad she wasn’t my type. She was more than willing,” Levi notes.

That comment earning Levi a nasty look from his brother. He smiles with a shrug. “What? I found her in my bed. I didn’t invite her there.”

Kyle disgusted, gets snotty. “We need a house manager. Not a woman looking for a dating arena.”

Unfortunately, it is a dating arena as men outnumber women. A new, single woman, arriving in town is almost front-page news. The single men in the area might make it a sport vying for her attentions. Scott, their friend, and the town’s Sheriff has promised to keep an eye on her just in case.

Kyle refocuses on his brother.

“The little bit Helen said indicated she wants new scenery. I hear escape.” Levi’s eyes conveyed his concern over their new employee clearly. “If she is truly on her own, maybe we should try to be a support net? It’s not like she has any friends being new in town.”

Kyle shrugs with indifference at the observation.

“Let her dictate. She sees us as her bosses. The divorce she touched on sounded messy. I didn’t ask details.”

His brother looks off towards the driveway before he continues. “As I went through one, I can totally understand. If I had only known what a selfish bitch she is.”

Levi bites his tongue. No point in agreeing. She put his brother through hell. Levi made sure to mention a little item he took care of.

“I already warned the hands to treat her like gold.”

With an appreciative smile for that, they went back to work. At least the chores filled the time waiting. Working silently, each tried to be as optimistic as possible. No sense borrowing trouble.

Unfortunately, Levi knew his brother to be right. So far in several months, they had been through way too many applicants. The process is getting extremely frustrating. They made it clear to every applicant Clanden is a small town. They also made it clear they lived on a cattle ranch. They repeatedly made it clear they were not exaggerating about being way off that beaten path.

Over 40 miles to be precise.

The final insults had been their father’s out of hand behavior. The man went out of his way to chase off applicants. Kyle worriedly voices his concern.

“Hopefully, she can handle dad. The last few used him as an excuse to leave. Worse, they avoided him making his care tougher.”

Shouts get their attention before Levi could answer.

“We got a runner!”

“Bull loose!”

Quickly they headed to mount saddled horses grazing in a nearby coral. A voice shouts to inform everyone what bull had gotten loose. “It’s Diablo!”

Kyle is not happy to hear that.

“Shit! Let’s completely scare the new gal. She might turn around and drive straight back to New York!”

Hooves thunder as they chase after their escapee. Kyle calls to the hands, “Push him towards the south pen!”

Levi’s shrill whistle brings their Border collies they use for herding. “Roland! Chester! Get the bull!”

The dogs quickly bolting to do as ordered. Barking echoes with hooves as they race after the large, mean tempered animal.

Diablo may be one of their best breeding bulls, but he has the temperament of a total bastard. He would charge anything, or anyone, that he spotted. This put their new employee in danger if she pulls in while he’s lose.

He believed love to be overrated. Most likely why he is unprepared for when that pickup pulled in……

Garrett Cole’s life is nice and quiet. Just the way he likes it since his divorce. He’s found horses are proving to be much more loyal than any woman in his opinion. When that pickup truck pulls into the yard carrying the new House Manager for Three Rivers Ranch? Garrett’s world is upended like he got tossed off a bucking bronc. The little gal that gets out catching his attention right quick. The problem being is he has no idea what to do about it.

A New York City transplant, Helen Arnold has reached Nirvana arriving at her new job. A ranch in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, with no neighbors for miles. Best of all, no one knows who she is. This job offer presented her the chance to start her life over. The last year of her life so drama filled, she craves quiet in the worst way. Putting the pedal to the metal, she happily left it all in the dust.

It absolutely is no hardship to leave behind a deceitful ex-husband and his secret life. Well, not so secret anymore after having made page one of the New York Post, much to her embarrassment. No more hiding for this gal! She is free!

Upon settling in at Three Rivers, she finds herself contending with a brooding cowboy among other things. Whatever. The only excitement in her life right now is wrangling her cranky home care patient. The keeping of the main house for him and his sons, not really a challenge compared to a hospital floor, but it keeps her busy.

The men at Three Rivers treat her well. They set out to prove friends are possible knowing she needs some to go with her new home. Her last group having been back stabbers when it came down to choosing. Here, she has begun some much-needed healing. Emotionally.

When Helen’s ex-husband finds her, dragging her into his mess, her life is endangered. Garrett finds there is no choice but for him to get involved. He is lost trying to get his nerve up to tell her how he feels towards her. It seems the little city gal caught this cowboy’s eye roping him right in.

With trouble circling in closer endangering Helen, is Garrett going to get the chance to do something about it before it’s too late?
